I'm bringing this review to a close now. This is partly because I’ve covered most of the core features of the game, explained why it’s awesome and why you should buy it. Perhaps more importantly, though, I've also just had an email from Mode 7’s servers telling me that an opponent, named Kemp, has pressed the PRIME button in a match we’re playing. ‘Log in to Frozen Synapse to see what happened,’ the email says, as if it knows I can’t stay away. I should stay and think up some pithy, witty way to end this review, but the game is rushing me to finish. So, I’ll just say that Frozen Synapse is the most moreish and brilliant game I’ve played in years. It’s responsible for me dreaming in shades of blue for the last three nights running and I wouldn’t have it any other way. 9.5/10

I'm not the world's biggest fan of simultaneous turn-based strategy, but Frozen Synapse's approach to simulating how a turn will play out removes a great deal of frustration that can normally come from out-of-the-blue simultaneous turn resolution. If you didn't anticipate for your opponent's actions, that just means either didn't run the scenarios or you still have a thing or two to learn about predicting behavior. And chances are, you'll feel like you're learning new things for years to come. Frozen Synapse manages to turn the intricate nature of turn-based tactical combat into something that is deviously complex yet accessible for all, and it does so in style. You might break it a couple of times, but you'll always come back for more. Expect it to make a lot of people's Top 10 lists this year. 9/10

Clinical yet chaotic, Mode7's game of tactics is a multiplayer masterpiece. With its multiplayer beta open to preorder customers for the last year, Mode7's game of tactics and shooting has grown a formidable reputation as a top-down, turn-based Counter-Strike. It's well deserved. Even now arriving at release with a substantial singleplayer campaign, it's easy to recommend on the basis of its multiplayer alone, in which players hatch plans for each turn separately but simultaneously, before witnessing how their intentions crash together and resolve. 9/10

Frozen Synapse takes the old, the stuffy and the traditionally glacial and it makes it brand new, instant and brutal. It's such an achievement. 9/10

Frozen Synapse is a great turn-based game with stirring tactical multiplayer battles that reward clever thinking. Frozen Synapse is a great game, thanks to its elegant mechanics, the depth of its tactical gameplay, and the tension of trying to get into your opponent's head. Minor matchmaking issues and the occasional disadvantageous starting location are only minor blemishes on an otherwise engrossing experience. While some may find the visuals too Spartan, on the whole, they are a great fit and accentuate the game's unique tactical focus. Overall, Frozen Synapse is well worth its $25 price tag, and as an added bonus, purchasing it gets you an additional copy to give to a friend, which makes it one bargain you won't want to miss. 8.5/10

This crazy tactical strategy shooter proves looks aren't everything. Instead of the drawn-out affairs so common to the turn-based strategy genre, Frozen Synapse delivers brisk tactical encounters that are loaded with risk and excitement. The subtle tension that builds as strategic plans are hashed out and executed simultaneously on the battlefield is priceless, resulting in a fresh, chaotic experience you’ll want to dive into over and over again. 8.5/10
